Keto Coffee, Butter Coffee, Bulletproof Coffee, what’s the difference anyway?
Not much to be honest. All of these essentially mean coffee mixed with fats.
Bulletproof started the trend with their original recipe: two parts of grass-fed butter to one part MCT oil. Keto Coffee has since expanded this idea to other fats and flavor enhancers. You’ve got heavy cream, coconut, and ghee. Vanilla, cinnamon and maca. The possibilities are endless!
Why are we putting butter in Coffee?
More than creamy and delicious, keto coffee is healthy. As long you’re using the right butter – that’s grass-fed – then you’re loading anti-inflammatory nutrients into your body, like Vitamins A & D and Butyrate.

The Perfect Keto Coffee Recipe
Alright, let’s get to it. We’ve spent hundreds over hours over the years perfecting our recipe and are sharing it with you today. Our recipe uses slightly less fat the original bulletproof recipe, which let’s the specialty coffee really shine. A hint of cream gives it a signature creaminess and a little vanilla for just a bit of sweetness. Make just one cup and you’ll wonder how you started your day any other way!

- 2 cups freshly brewed coffee
- 1 tbsp grass-fed butter
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 scoop MCT powder (~4 g of MCTs)
- 1 tsp heavy cream
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- Cocoa powder
- Maca powder
- Collagen protein powder
With keto coffee it’s easy to get caught up in buzzwords like “grass-fed butter” and “MCTs.” These ingredients are critical – but don’t let them fool you. Great keto coffee ALWAYS starts with the coffee.
Many factors affect how coffee tastes. Where it was grown, how it was harvested, washed and processed, the roasting technique, and roast date. Our suggestion – choose high quality, freshly roasted beans from a reputable roaster. Our favorites are Heart, Blue Bottle, and Stumptown. You can have all of these shipped to you directly within days of a fresh roast.
You will also want to buy unground beans (they stay fresher). Yep, that means you’ll need a grinder. An electric one off Amazon will do, but if you want a more consistent grind, then go with an inexpensive hand grinder from Amazon. You’ll need to spend $100+ on an electric grinder to match the hand grinder’s consistency.
For brewing, a pour over setup (get the Hario V60 dripper and filters for under $20) or a handy Aeropress both deliver great tasting coffees – keto or otherwise.
And if this all sounds like a lot of work, your trusty Keurig will get you airborn (we won’t judge). You can even use instant coffee! But you’ve got to be very picky….
Okay, let’s make some keto coffee!
Our first step is to prepare all the non-coffee ingredients. The coffee will come soon, we promise.
Measure out all of your non-coffee ingredients (1 tbsp grass-fed butter, 1 tbsp coconut oil, 1 scoop MCT powder, ½ tsp heavy cream, and ¼ tsp vanilla extract) and place them directly into a bullet blender or any other countertop blender. We want everything in its place and ready to receive the hot coffee.
Our next step is to brew roughly 2 cups (16 oz) of fresh coffee, using your preferred method. We take coffee seriously, and make ours just like the pros at Blue Bottle do. It’s worth the effort.
- Bring roughly 400g (2 cups) of water to a boil
- Measure out 30g of coffee (3 tbsp) and grind using your grinder
- Put a size 02 filter in the Hario V60 dripper
- Add the coffee grounds into the filter and shake it just a bit with your hand to ensure the grounds are level. Put the brewer either on the server, on a cup or directly over your magic bullet. We get fancy and use a scale to measure the water we pour in each of the four steps, but it's not mandatory.
- The first pour is just enough water to get all of the grounds wet. Pour in a slow, circular motion, inside to outside and back inside if needed. If you were weighing on a scale it would equal roughly 60g of water, or double the weight of your coffee grounds. Wait about 30 sec after you are done with this pour to start the next 3 pours.
- The next three pours each require about 100g of water. Same pouring style, slow, in-out, in-out with a circular motion. Go ahead with the second pour just like this.
- Wait until the water has drained to level of the grounds, and repeat this process 2 more times. You will use roughly 350g of water in total. You should have just a bit of water left in your kettle when finished. Voila – a perfectly brewed, black pour-over coffee.
Our last step is to blend the coffee with all of the healthy fats. If you didn’t brew your coffee directly into a magic bullet or similar countertop blender, add the coffee to the blender now.
Blend on high for 20-30 sec until fully dissolved, frothy, and delicious looking. Pour into your favorite large mug and enjoy!
